Vortex-glass transition in superconducting Nb/Cu superlattices
Nb/Cu superconducting superlattices have been fabricated by dc magnetron
sputtering. This system shows a vortex glass transition with critical exponents
similar to high temperatures superconductors exponents. The transition
dymensionality is governed by the superconducting coupling regime. The vortex
glass transition shows a pure two dimensional behavior in decoupled
superlattices and a quasi-two dimensional behavior in the superlattice coupling

Contrasting Physiological and Environmental Controls of Evapotranspiration over Kernza Perennial Crop, Annual Crops, and C4 and Mixed C3/C4 Grasslands
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License.Perennial grain crops have been suggested as a more sustainable alternative to annual crops. Yet their water use and how they are impacted by environmental conditions have been seldom compared to those of annual crops and grasslands. Here, we identify the dominant mechanisms driving evapotranspiration (ET), and how they change with environmental conditions in a perennial Kernza crop (US-KLS), an annual crop field (US-ARM), a C4 grassland (US-KON), and a mixed C3/C4 grassland (US-KFS) in the Central US. More specifically, we have utilized the omega (Ω) decoupling factor, which reflects the dominant mechanisms responsible for the evapotranspiration (ET) of the canopy. Our results showed that the US-ARM site was the most coupled with the lowest decoupling values. We also observed differences in coupling mechanism variables, showing more sensitivity to the water fluctuation variables as opposed to the radiative flux variables. All of the sites showed their lowest Ω value in 2012, the year of the severe drought in the Central US. The 2012 results further indicate the dependence on the water fluctuation variables. This was especially true with the perennial Kernza crop, which displayed much higher soil moisture values. In this regard, we believe that the ability of perennial Kernza to resist water stress and retain higher soil moisture values is both a result of its deeper roots, in addition to its higher Ω value. Through the analysis of both the site comparison and the comparison of the differences in years, we conclude that the perennial Kernza crop (US-KLS) is more similar in its microclimate effects to the C4 (US-KON) and mixed C3/C4 (US-KFS) grassland sites as opposed to its annual counterpart (US-ARM). This has implications for the role of perennial agriculture for addressing agricultural resilience under changing climate conditions
Incorporating Inductances in Tissue-Scale Models of Cardiac Electrophysiology
In standard models of cardiac electrophysiology, including the bidomain and
monodomain models, local perturbations can propagate at infinite speed. We
address this unrealistic property by developing a hyperbolic bidomain model
that is based on a generalization of Ohm's law with a Cattaneo-type model for
the fluxes. Further, we obtain a hyperbolic monodomain model in the case that
the intracellular and extracellular conductivity tensors have the same
anisotropy ratio. In one spatial dimension, the hyperbolic monodomain model is
equivalent to a cable model that includes axial inductances, and the relaxation
times of the Cattaneo fluxes are strictly related to these inductances. A
purely linear analysis shows that the inductances are negligible, but models of
cardiac electrophysiology are highly nonlinear, and linear predictions may not
capture the fully nonlinear dynamics. In fact, contrary to the linear analysis,
we show that for simple nonlinear ionic models, an increase in conduction
velocity is obtained for small and moderate values of the relaxation time. A
similar behavior is also demonstrated with biophysically detailed ionic models.
Using the Fenton-Karma model along with a low-order finite element spatial
discretization, we numerically analyze differences between the standard
monodomain model and the hyperbolic monodomain model. In a simple benchmark
test, we show that the propagation of the action potential is strongly
influenced by the alignment of the fibers with respect to the mesh in both the
parabolic and hyperbolic models when using relatively coarse spatial
discretizations. Accurate predictions of the conduction velocity require
computational mesh spacings on the order of a single cardiac cell. We also

Application of unsupervised chemometric analysis and self-organising feature map (SOFM) for the classification of lighter fuels
A variety of lighter fuel samples from different manufacturers (both unevaporated and evaporated) were analysed using conventional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. In total 51 characteristic peaks were selected as variables and subjected to data pre-processing prior to subsequent analysis using unsupervised chemometric analysis (PCA and HCA) and a SOFM artificial neural network. The results obtained revealed that SOFM acted as a powerful means of evaluating and linking degraded ignitable liquid sample data to their parent unevaporated liquids
Associations between age and sleep apnea risk among newborn infants
ObjectiveAmong older children, sleep‐disordered breathing (SDB) is associated with measurable neurocognitive consequences. However, diagnostic SDB thresholds are lacking for infants < 12 months. We sought to evaluate the relationship between SDB indices, gestational age (GA), and postmenstrual age (PMA) for infants who underwent clinically‐indicated polysomnograms at a tertiary care center.MethodsEvery infant < 3‐months chronological age whose first clinically‐indicated polysomnogram was between 2/2012 and 2/2017 was included. Linear regression was used to evaluate associations between apnea‐hypopnea index (AHI), obstructive‐apnea index (OAI), and GA and PMA for infants with and without obvious clinical risk factors for SDB (eg, micrognathia and cleft palate).ResultsFor 53 infants without obvious SDB risk factors (GA 35.6 ± 4.5 weeks; PMA 41.2 ± 4.0 weeks), mean AHI was 27 ± 18 and OAI 2.9 ± 4.5. There was a weak inverse relationship between AHI and PMA (r2 = 0.12, P = 0.01), but AHI was not predicted by GA (r2 = 0.04, P = 0.13). Conversely, OAI was more strongly associated with GA (r2 = 0.33, P < 0.0001) than PMA (r2 = 0.08, P = 0.036). For 28 infants with congenital structural anomalies that predispose to SDB (GA 38.0 ± 3.1 weeks, PMA 43.1 ± 3.3 weeks, AHI 37.7 ± 30, OAI 8.2 ± 11.8), neither AHI nor OAI were related to PMA or GA.ConclusionsAmong infants who received clinically‐indicated polysomnograms but did not have obvious structural risk for SDB, AHI declined with advancing PMA, but obstructive‐apnea was best predicted by prematurity. Perennials as Future Grain Crops: Opportunities and Challenges
Perennial grain crops could make a valuable addition to sustainable agriculture, potentially even as an alternative to their annual counterparts. The ability of perennials to grow year after year significantly reduces the number of agricultural inputs required, in terms of both planting and weed control, while reduced tillage improves soil health and on-farm biodiversity. Presently, perennial grain crops are not grown at large scale, mainly due to their early stages of domestication and current low yields. Narrowing the yield gap between perennial and annual grain crops will depend on characterizing differences in their life cycles, resource allocation, and reproductive strategies and understanding the trade-offs between annualism, perennialism, and yield. The genetic and biochemical pathways controlling plant growth, physiology, and senescence should be analyzed in perennial crop plants. This information could then be used to facilitate tailored genetic improvement of selected perennial grain crops to improve agronomic traits and enhance yield, while maintaining the benefits associated with perennialism
Climate change challenges, plant science solutions
Climate change is a defining challenge of the 21st century, and this decade is a critical time for action to mitigate the worst effects on human populations and ecosystems. Plant science can play an important role in developing crops with enhanced resilience to harsh conditions (e.g. heat, drought, salt stress, flooding, disease outbreaks) and engineering efficient carbon-capturing and carbon-sequestering plants. Here, we present examples of research being conducted in these areas and discuss challenges and open questions as a call to action for the plant science community

Measuring well-being in aphasia: The GHQ-28 versus the NHP
This study aimed to get the opinions of people with aphasia on two subjective well-being measures: the General Health Questionnaire 28-item version (GHQ-28) (Goldberg & Hillier, 1979) and the Nottingham Health Profile (NHP) (Hunt, McKenna, McEwen, Williams, & Papp, 1981). Twelve persons with moderate to mild aphasia of at least 2-years duration completed the GHQ-28 and the NHP. In a semistructured intenriew, they gave their feedback on the two questionnaires. All participants were able to complete both instruments. Nine out of 12 participants showed high psychological distress (> 5/28) in the GHQ-28. The NHP (part 1 less the physical abilities section) had a correlation of 0.78 (p < .01) with the GHQ-28. The social dysfunction subscale of the NHP identified more problems in the participants with aphasia than the social isolation subscale of the GHQ-28. The majority of the participants (10 out of 12) preferred the NHP, as they found it easier to understand and respond to. This small-scale study indicated that both the GHQ-28 and the NHP can be administered to people with moderate to mild aphasia and provide useful information on their well-being.
